Typically most people are either too close to the situation and have become emotionally involved, weakening their ability to negotiate effectively. Or, simply, they’re just not good at negotiating – some see it as a form of confrontation and are uneasy, they don’t want to offend or upset the other party. Negotiation is both an Art and a Science. For obvious reasons, I’m not going to detail here the strategies or tactics I employ in negotiations, which vary based on the scenario, parties involved, etc. Regardless, I’m always prepared. Understand too that not all scenarios are win-win, nor are they all about completely destroying the other side. There’s a broad range and mix of skills at play, including graceful persuasion, to get what you want. Part of negotiation is about control and there are many ways to achieve control in a negotiation.
